Recognition of qualifications / questionnaires for migrant workers

There are numerous examples in Northern Ireland of people working below their level ofRespect Migrant Workers [4 1.jpg] qualification. We have all heard anecdotal reports of Polish teachers working as cleaners; Filipino nurses working in the private sector as care assistants, etc.

Migrant workers often bring in skills and qualifications that are not being used. This might be due to their level of English, or to work permit restrictions, or to the fact that their qualifications were not recognised when they arrived here. It could also be reflective of much wider systematic issues.

Our UNISON race group is keen to carry out some work to challenge the current situation.

In order to do this, an audit of the level of qualifications (compared to actual employment) of our migrant worker members would provide some very useful data.

You can download our questionnaire in English and Polish.
